City of Bones ~ The Mortal Instruments ~ #1

So I mentioned a week ago that I had my nose stuck in a book, or more accurately a series of books.

City of Bones
The Mortal Instruments - Book One

The first book introduced us to Clary Fray, our central character. A fifteen year old who lives with her artist mother Jocelyn. We quickly find out that Clary is not an ordinary mundane (mortal human) when she heads to the Pandemonium Club with best friend Simon, where she witnesses what appears to be murder by a group of 3 teenagers, covered with weird tattoos, wielding swords and snake-like weapons. There's also nothing left to show that the murder had ever happened, no one besides Clary, saw anyone...

The next day Clary is introduced to one of the teenagers from the Club - Jace Wayland. He tells her they are Shadowhunters or Nephilim - demon hunters. Then comes the disappearance of her mother, and a demon attack on herself which leads her to end up in the Shadowhunters home, The Institute. It is here she learns she is also a Shadowhunter, which means either her mother or father was one. That they hunt and kill demons, that the weird tattoos are runes drawn onto their skin giving them special powers, about an evil, former Shadowhunter who betrayed the Nephilim called Valentine, and about the Mortal Cup. One of the Mortal Instruments given to the first Shadowhunter by the Angel Raziel - drinking from the cup turns normal humans into half-Angel Shadowhunters...

are you keeping up? :)

Lots of things happen but I don't want to give too much away. It is found that Clary doesn't remember anything of her Shadowhunter past as her mother was having her memories blocked by a local Warlock, Magnus Bane. Due to the fact that Jocelyn was once married to the evil Valentine, and that she fled from him once she knew of his evil plans, though she was led to believe that both he and their young son had been killed in a house fire. She wanted to raise Clary as a mundane.

So we find out that Vampires, Werewolves, Faeries, Warlocks and others (known as Downworlders) all exist. That not only is Valentine after the Mortal Cup, but he is in fact, Clary's father...
There's a romance or two included, one with a viscous twist....

Written by Cassandra Clare in the genre Fantasy - Young Adult.

This first book has been made into a movie..

There was a fair bit if simplifying for the movie, less locations, simpler stroylines to follow - but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I did see it before reading the books though...

One thing to note about the series..
Book #2 City of Ashes
Book #3 City of Glass
Book #4 City of Fallen Angels
Book #5 City of Lost Souls
and upcoming Book #6 City of Heavenly Fire (due May 2014)
is that there's no time between novels, where you finish off in one, you begin in the next. The first 5 are like one HUGE story, broken into parts.

I really enjoyed this supernatural series. It was easy to follow, the characters are easily liked (or disliked!) and I cannot wait for the May release of Book #6. The 2nd movie is also to be released this year. Initial reviews from readers of the first movie weren't that great, though I think it's to be expected that a movie will be simplified from the book. There was also one sorta big difference in the end, one they'll have to readdress in the 2nd film because it's an opinion from one character which continues into book 2, although in the movie they suggest he thinks otherwise...

Are you intrigued enough to read? Or to watch?? Let me know what you think :)

  1. You got me at demon hunters!!!!!!!!!!

I'll probably see if I can find a link to watch this move online tomorrow lol. I'm also keen to see 42ronin (mainly for keanu reeves) and the new Monkey King movie

    1. I'll have to look these two up..

  2. I just watched the movie! didn't expect the incestual twist! So much that I had to look it up and went *phew*

    1. yeah, I went *phew* too... what did you think of it? In the books, he believes it for quite a while, so sad knowing the truth - I just wanted to scream it into the book so the poor bugger could just get on with it!

  3. It's a good break down of it - so much so that I think I'd like to at least watch the movie. At least there wouldn't be a Kristin Stewart in this ruining the movie!

    1. haha! Not a KStew fan Leah? Lily Collins stars in the movie. :)
